After the grant submission was received, the leaners investigators were asked to examine and give detailed information on the timing of adherence of the bacteria to various substances. It was observed that student's one had difficulties in establishing something new, and was able to proceed after being given directions. It was also noticed that after moving student one from office to laboratory, showed significant improvement and competence in using instruments and apparatus provided. The decision to move student one from office to the laboratory had significant influence because the researcher was able to play a critical role in contributing learning styles that best suited his or her requirements. In the case of student two, there was no need to exhibit hands-on tactic to exhibit different concepts for the various fragments of the project. Woeste and Barham observed that student two was inquired to document all procedures and information regarding the task . How Does Exodus Story Reflect Gods Presence Religion Essay In many ways the narrative of Exodus Chapters 1-15 may be considered the birth story of Israel as a people. The book of Exodus opens with Israel suffering oppressively as slaves in Egypt, but in the end of the story (Exodus 14-15), the hand of God delivered them through the Reed Sea to a new life beginning at Mt. P. 93 Verses 1à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ6 sum up the history of Israel as a clan, as described more thoroughly in Genesis chapters 12à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ50. These six verses remind us that all that is going to take place in Exodus is directly related to what has gone before as described in Genesis. The curse of God in Genesis 3 included hard toil, which is surely the lot of Israel in Egypt. The salvation of mankind, as promised also in Genesis 3, was through the birth of a child. So too it was through the birth of a child (Moses, Exod. 2) that God provided a deliverer for His people. As men strove to provide themselves with security and significance by the building of a city and a tower, using bricks and mortar, so Egypt sought to secure herself by forcing the Israelites to build cities with bricks and mortar (compare Gen. 11 with Exod. 1:14; 5:1). Most importantly, this portion of the introduction to the Book of Exodus (Exod. 1:1à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ6) links the existence and rapid growth of Israel as a nation to the covenant that God made with Abraham (Gen. 12:1à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ3), which He reiterated to the patriarchs (Gen. 26:2à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ5, 24; 28:13à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ15). The close of the Book of Genesis anticipated the situation existing at the opening of the Book of Exodus. A numerous people had developed from the twelve sons of Jacob. The Land had been promised to Abrahams descendants to be occupied when a people sufficient to inhabit and control it was ready. Exodus is the account of the final stage toward that readiness. It is the book of the birth of two special sons: Moses, the son of a couple from the tribe of Levi (2:1-2), and Israel, the firstborn son of the Most High God. Having become a numerous people, God brings forth a fledgling nation, created by His sovereign grace and cared for out of His steadfast love (1:1-18:27). The Exodus from Egypt constitutes the birth of Gods Son-Nation (1:1-15:21). Israel had been segregated in the land of Goshen as part of the divine plan for creating a unique people from the descendents of Abraham (Gen. 46:28-34) and had become a basically homogeneous entity over the course of the 430-year sojourn in Egypt. Harsh treatment by a Pharaoh unsympathetic to the children of Israel hurried the crisis that would result in their expulsion from the womb of Egypt. Yahweh for his part provides and prepares his deliverer for the eventual deliverance of the nation from Egyptian bondage (2:1-4:31). At this point the birth of the deliverer, Moses, becomes the focus of the book. Moses is cast out by his mother and then taken in by none other than Pharaohs daughter. As Egypt had been used providentially to care for the clan of Abraham so the King of Egypt would afford a Hebrew child the best that the country had to offer in terms of upbringing and education (2:1-10). However, before Moses could lead Israel out of Egypt he himself had to experience exile as he fled from a fearful Pharaoh until God is ready to deliver His people from under a hostile, oppressive king (2:11-4:17). Finally, Moses is appointed as Israels deliverer (3:1-4:17). The appointment of Moses to his task occurs in three phases. All three stages were necessary in order to galvanize this 80 years old man to act on behalf of the LORD God of his fathers (3:15). First, Moses is confronted with the holiness of Yahweh at the burning bush as the mountain of God (3:1-5). Secondly, Moses is asses of the loyal love of Yahweh for his people and called to participate in it (3:6-10). The third phase consisted of Yahweh dispelling four objections that Moses raises regarding his own inadequacy for the task (3:11-4:17), each objection being countered by some aspect of Yahwehs person or purpose. Finally, Aaron is appointed as Moses Spokesman (4:14). By divine revelation God instructed Aaron to meet Moses in the wilderness (4:27). They met on the holy mountain of God. Where Moses had to share the most recent events of his life, especially his encounter with God at the burning bush, the commission he had been given to deliver Israel, and the part which Aaron was to play in it all. Together they both went back to Egypt to petition Pharaoh for the release of Yahwehs firstborn Israel (4:18-31). This image underscores the fact that the nation of Israel already existed in relationship to God. The impact of Gods presence can be seen in the shown down of the ten plaques as well as the crossing of the Reed Sea. Upon Pharaohs first refusal to let Israel go Yahweh reveals his plans for judging unbelief and encouraging the faith of the Israelites (5:1-6:1). God was about to reveal himself in the characteristic embodied in the name YHWH. The purpose of the first encounter was realized, and life got tougher. However, Israel was not yet ready to take YHWH at his word (6:9). With Moses and Aaron already being stretched in their faith, the Lord reissues the command to go to Pharaoh and demand release for Israel (6:10-11). When they object, the Lord restates his expectations (6:13) along with an explanation of his strategy (6:28- 7:7). As one who stands in the place of God to Pharaoh (7:1) Moses will have a ringside seat to the struggle of the unbelieving heart. It is through the stubbornness of this Pharaoh that Yahweh will effect deliverance to Israel, and manifest himself to the w hole nation of Egypt (7:4-5). Moses and Aaron did respond to the revelation of Gods plan and submit to his command (7:6). In the second encounter with Pharaoh Moses announces plagues against the land and its gods in order to secure Israels release (7:8-10:29). The plagues against Egypt were miraculous interventions of the sovereign God of the universe. They were designed to demonstrate the uniqueness of the God of Israel and to deliver the people of Israel from their oppressive hosts. The whole pantheon of Egyptian gods, not least of which was the Pharaoh himself, was being shown to be impotent in the presence of the God of Israel. Finally, Moses last encounter with Pharaoh was the announcement of the plague of the death of all Egypts firstborn, along with the institution of the Passover (11:1-12:36). The tenth plague is set apart from the nine because it is the decisive act of judgment against Pharaoh and the Egyptians, and also it would hold special historical and theological significance for Israel throughout their history through its association with the Passover (12:1-28). The Hebrews calendar woul d now name this as the first month (12:2). The feast would be an everlasting memorial of redemption (12:14) and would remind the nation that her oppressor had been judged for its unbelief (12:23, 27). In addition the associated feast of Unleavened Bread would remind them of their deliverance in haste from Egypt unto a prolonged experience under the blessing of Yahweh. Redemption by blood (from the guilt of sin) on the night of Passover would be matched by redemption by power (from the death of slavery) at the Reed Sea. As promised, the tenth plague is inflicted and the firstborn of man and beast dies (12:29-30) forcing Pharaoh to comply with Yahwehs command, with the consent of the rest of the Egyptians (12:31-36). Though the physical exodus of the people is not really completed at this point, the narrative recounts the first movement of the nation (12:37). Before resuming the actual exodus narrative, additional material is communicated, from the Lord to Moses (12:43-13:2) and from Moses to the people (13:3-16) concerning the Feasts of Passover and Unleavened Bread, and the sanctification of the firstborn. These become the memorials of Israels redemption from Egypt. Having been sparred in the Passover by the blood of the lamb, Israel experiences the completion of her deliverance out of bondage by the power of God as he destroys the pursuing Egyptians (13:17-15:21) portraying him as a divine warrior (15:3) in their song of liberation. Finally, in assessing how God dealt with the characters in the narratives, He chooses Joseph to begin Israels migration to Egypt (Gen. 50:19-20; Exodus 1:5); Pharaoh King of Egypt so as to demonstrate his sovereignty (1:8); Shiphrah and Puah to disregard the Pharaohs decree (1:15); Jochebed to birth Moses (2:2); hide him (2:3) and nursed him (2:9); Pharaohs daughter to adopt and raise Moses (2:5-10); Miriams to keep watch over Moses (2:4); Moses as Israels deliverer (3:10); Aaron as Moses spokesman (4:14); Zipporah, Moses wife to perform circumcision on their son to save Moses from the wrath of God (4:25-26); and Jethro, Moses father-in-law to confess that Yahweh is Supreme (18:9-12). The statement about God hardening Pharaohs heart is often characterized as unfair on the part of the Divine Sovereign with respect to allowing for repentance and faith (4:21; 7:3; 9:12). However, it must be observed that Pharaoh hardened his own heart at least seven times (7:13, 14, 22; 8:15, 19, 32; 9:7) before the Lord took similar action (9:12). Pharaoh was responsible for his own unbelief and therefore fell under the righteous judgment of God. The Lords hardening of Pharaohs heart (after the monarchs unbelief was settled) served to heighten the judgment of the plagues so as to more effectively display His own power and majesty, which in the long run may have actually brought others to repentance. ____________________________________________________________________________

Madness and Insanity in Shakespeares Hamlet - The Necessary Madness of

The Necessary Madness of Hamlet      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, is a complex play, filled with layers of meaning. These are often revealed through the madness of the characters and the theme of madness throughout the play. Although Hamlet and Ophelia are the only characters thought to be so afflicted, the reactions of other characters to this madness mirrors their own preoccupations.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When one refers to madness in Hamlet, most would think of Hamlet's madness, or at least that that he was pretending to possess. Although Ophelia does go insane and ultimately commits suicide, the central lunacy of the play revolves around Hamlet himself. Hamlet's plan to act mad is completely unexplained. It is safe to assume that he is pretending to be mad so he can get away with saying and doing things that would not ordinarily be tolerated. Also, if people think that he was crazy, they would not pay any attention to him in his plot to kill Claudius and avenge his father's death. This plan backfires though, because his family and friends bend over backwards to find the cause of his madness.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Every main character in Hamlet seems to have their own conjectures as to why Hamlet is acting so out of character. One obvious reason is the mourning of his father's death. In addition to this, though, they all have personal ideas of varying merit. Claudius thinks that Hamlet has some kind of secret cause for the sudden change in his personality. Gertrude believes that along with being upset about the death of his father, Hamlet is tormented by the fact that she married Claudius. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern believe that he is hurt, for his ambitions have been squashed. Not only does his uncle... ...thers. Ophelia's insanity is very different from Hamlet's and quite straightforward. She does not need to ponder very hard before she decidessuicide is a much better option than life has ever been.      The madness in Hamlet sets up nearly all of the play. The main character, Hamlet, is believed to be crazy by all, except Horatio who knows Hamlet's reasoning behind the insanity. All of the characters decide on their own guesses as to what is plaguing Hamlet. The ethics surrounding food hasn’t always been a major contributor in ones decision on what to eat. In the beginning, we would have to physically hunt or gather our meals in order to survive. The choice of what was for breakfast, lunch or dinner solely relied on what was accessible to us. The ethical questions would only come as a result of a modernized food system, where other options for food became accessible and convenient. In the essay Consider the Lobster by David Foster Wallace, the author describes lobsters in New England in the 1800’s as having an â€Å"Unbelievable abundance (238). † These crustaceous creatures were all over the shores of New England. Wallace writes about the Boston seashore as, â€Å"being littered with lobsters after hard storms†¦ (238). † Yet, Lobster were considered â€Å"low-class† and as Wallace states, â€Å"†¦eaten only by the poor and institutionalized (237). † It was considered unethical to even feed the poor lobster â€Å"†¦more than once a week (238). † This was modernized New England, which eventually changed at the turn of the century, just as Lobster shifted from being â€Å"low class† to â€Å"chewable fuel†. As the world became more industrialized, food became centralized. The shift from small businesses to large companies started to occur. The lobster industry changed as well during these times as Wallace describes, â€Å"Maine’s earliest lobster industry was based around a dozen such seaside canneries in the 1840’s, from which lobster was shipped as far away as California†¦ (238). † Just like the lobster industry in New England, many companies in the United States started to fulfill the demands for products to gain a profit. Ethics became secondary to making money. Corporations would produce so much that they would drive the price down, increasing its affordability and making it more accessible and widely consumed. Eventually, large companies would become so efficient and affordable, that small businesses like farms and mom and pop shops found it increasingly difficult to compete. Many small companies and farms had to either adjust their products to niche markets or work as a subsidiary to these corporations. Along with mass production of products, was a new manufacturing process. Foods started to become streamlined in such a way that they would grow in the harshest of environments. These new forms of industrialization lead to the creation of processed foods. The companies found ways to maximize profits while making the costs as affordable as possible for the consumer. The supermarkets offered everything one could think of, packaged and ready to eat. Although the prices for most foods were at an all-time low, hunger and malnutrition still existed. There were also issues arising regarding consumer trust in food safety, and the effects on the human body. As a result of these cost efficient products, people in the United States started to become increasingly heavy, leading to an obesity epidemic and a major health crisis. The ethical issues involving economical behavior of consumers and agricultural ethics are at question. Is it unethical for corporations to mass produce unhealthy foods, knowing the adverse side effects on the environment and growing rates of obesity in the United States? The trend seemed to lead to, the more affordable the food, the more we consume. Is this a personal problem or are the companies to blame for offering these products to us? We must first look into the goals of a business and if ethics play any part in the obligations to supply our population with affordable food. The very basic objective to any business is to create a profit. This is what allows companies to continue function and thrive. The best way for this to happen is to make something that is sellable and where there is room for profit. In the food industry corn is not only a commodity it’s a common ingredient in almost every product on our shelves. According to Michael Pollan, in his book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, It is also used to feed most of the animals that become meats in our supermarkets. To say that corn is widely used would be an understatement. It seemed that we couldn’t produce enough of this plant. Not only is our climate great for growing it, we also were able to store it very effectively. The boom in corn production can be traced back to the nineteen seventies. Since those same years, â€Å"†¦American’s average daily intake of calories has jumped by more than 10 percent (Pollan 102). † The reason for this increased caloric intake leaves many to question whether people are eating more because it’s less expensive or people are eating the same amounts but the food contains more calories. Either way, the companies that were producing these items didn’t seem to be bothered by the problem affecting â€Å"three of every five Americans being overweight (Pollan 102). † The truth is that the companies are driven by profits. The Americans who consume these foods create the profits. Additionally, a lot of these companies are traded on the public market and have a responsibility to their shareholders, who subsequently are the same ones buying these foods. So the companies were being driven to make profits for the people invested. Two of the biggest soda companies in the world, Coca-Cola and Pepsi, have followed these trends as well. As Pollen says, â€Å"By 1984, Coca-Cola and Pepsi had switched over entirely from sugar to high-fructose corn syrup. Why? Because HFCS was a few cents cheaper than sugar (thanks in part to tariffs on imported sugarcane secured by corn refiners) and consumers didn’t seem to notice the substitution (104). †It’s as if these corn companies were monopolizing the industry, trying to turn-over as much product as possible. The increased production would eventually lead to increased portion sizes. Instead of lowering the prices of products, companies started charging a small upcharge for additional food and soda. This practice of continually turning over product has become so dangerous that now, â€Å"†¦in 2000 the number of people suffering from [overnutrition]-a billion- had surpassed the number suffering from malnutrition-800 million (Pollan 102). † There is clearly something broken with this system. These companies are catering to our consumer appetites and enabling us to act accordingly. You would think that the prices of the food being low would solve our food problems globally, but the answer is unfortunately no. These companies are in places where there is both a market for high sales and where they can grow these crops. Most of the areas that are facing malnutrition are in remote areas of the world. These areas wouldn’t make the companies money and therefor there isn’t an incentive for them. On the other hand, America is of course one of the largest consumer countries in the world. Our desire for food is unsurpassed by most counties. There is no question that Americans have a sweet tooth. It is part of the human makeup to consume high energy foods and is linked to natural selection. This of course doesn’t mean that we are completely free of blame for our overindulging. We are all individuals and are responsible in formulating our own decisions. The companies which provide us with these calorie-packed foods and beverages also list their nutritional information on the packages. If we were to eat any packaged foods, we would be responsible for understanding the health risks involved. The real problem is whether we have the mental capacity to control our physical urges. There is extensive research that suggests, â€Å"†¦people {presented} with large portions will eat up to 30 percent more (Pollan 106). † At one time in our history, this might have served us. Now, there is no question that our bodies are becoming poisoned from this. Knowing all of this information, companies continue doing their best to offer these calorie-packed foods. This is evident in just about every corner store and fast food restaurant. The ethics concerning public safety and effects on the human body are clear. Companies are only concerned over their ability to raise a profit. Their aim to create profits from the overconsumption of high energy foods has been effective in making Americans unhealthy, while continuing to turn over profits. While the companies are certainly a large part of the problem, the consumers are also to blame. They have enabled this overproduction by continuing to consume the same products making them sick. Additionally, people seem to be ignoring their recommended caloric intakes and are choosing to eat more and more. Companies can only be blamed for producing products with limited nutritional value. They are ethically absolved of their responsibilities if they inform their consumers properly. Their goal is to make profits, not worry whether their consumers are eating the recommended serving size or not. The best way to take control of this issue would to be to consume less and choose healthier options as individuals. The more aware we become as individuals, the healthier we will become as a society.

Shakespeare Is renowned for his writing, in Hamlet specifically the seven soliloquies. Soliloquies are monologue type speeches spoken by Hamlet generally and give the sense of the situation and feelings of Hamlet at the time. After carefully annotating the seven soliloquies, one can see the different states of mind, situations and characterizations of Hamlet. The deader can relate to the feelings Hamlet experiences regardless of the fact most readers have never been In situations as extreme as Hamlet. In the first soliloquy titled, O that this too too sullied flesh would . 2), Hamlet speaks about his fathers death and how he is feeling about his mothers new relationship with his Uncle. Like Im sure anyone in his situation would feel Hamlet seems to be unsure. He loves his mother dearly and only wishes her happiness, but the fact she married her dead husbands brother less then two months following his fathers death worries Hamlet. : For myself personally, I have never experienced meeting like my parents divorcing or dying. However, to an extent I can relate because I can see from his point of view how awkward the situation is. I can relate in the aspect however of grief. Less than two months after his fathers untimely death, Hamlet still mourns his loss. However, Hamlet is crudely advised by his mother to Just get over it. She hopes that he can move on and I can relate to that. It Is hard to relate to a parent dying to breaking up with someone, but on a much smaller scale It seems very similar. Last year after I had a year relationship end, I was heartbroken, however he situation only became worse when after a few weeks; I felt a lot of pressure from my friends to just get over the situation. To put it like Shakespeare I am not a beast and I need time to mourn situations like these, time heals all wounds. The second soliloquy Is In Act 1, Scene 5 and Is again a monologue by Hamlet. The section Immediately follows the return of the newly dead king In the form of a split or ghost. This particular passage demonstrated the several emotions Hamlet was experiencing in this state of turmoil. The situation surrounding his fathers death has omen to light and Hamlet is faced with a decision of believing the ghost and avenging his fathers murder or forgetting the ghost ever spoke to him at all and sparing his uncle his life. Although I have never had to (seriously) debate killing someone I can certainly relate to the distress of having no Idea what to do In certain situations and contemplating a decision for hours before making one. Life Is full of compromises and I dont believe there is anyone out there who cant relate to having trouble making an important decision at least once in their lifetime that will have enormous mummifications for everyone around them. Whether it be, should I avenge my fathers murder and kill my uncle or something like should I stop being friends with someone or try and forgive them. These decisions could prove to haunt you In your future or your family as well as prove to be Instrumental In deciding your future character and The third soliloquy happens in Act 2 Scene 2. Hamlet at this point has decided he wants to avenge his fathers death and kill Claudia, but is having trouble and is getting frustrated at the fact that he cant plan and execute the killing as decisively as is father would have wanted. Hamlet is an interesting character because in no way is he either a hero or a villain. He has only the best intentions but regardless he still becomes determined to kill other. Regardless of what he does to convince himself to kill his uncle he cant and deep down I believe that shows that Hamlet truly is a moral person. Both Hamlet and myself are not perfect people. Neither of us are horrible people either, we strive to be the best and most responsible person we can possibly be and I think that is what makes his character so historically and emotionally appealing. In most literature you can see your protagonist as a clean-cut good guy. The fact that Hamlet breaks that stereotype and makes some decisions that many would see as immoral, makes the book that much more interesting. The Fourth of Shakespeare soliloquies begins with To be, or no to be: that is the question. As probably one of the most famous lines of the play, it truly is a great philosophical question about the decisions we make everyday. The quote itself found in act 3 scene 1 accurately describes Hamlets state of mind throughout the scene. Hamlet strongly debates the meaning of his existence at this point in time and whether it would be easier if he Just didnt exist, or if he were to commit suicide if that would simplify everything. Torn between making a decision, he decides he is a coward and that is why he cant kill himself. This whole concept is fairly relatable to the reader because, of course, sometimes its easier to Just want to disappear or die rather then face with the worlds challenges. However, like Hamlet discovers he must keep living because there is a purpose to his life we each resolve to plod on each day attempting to resolve or conflicts and struggles. The following two soliloquies come from the same section(3. 3). In this scene Hamlet definitively decides how he will handle the situation. First by addressing his mother in a cruel, not unnatural way about the situation and second by plotting the murder of his uncle Claudia. In the pursuit of vengeance Hamlet, postpones his killing until after he is done praying, so that rather than go to heaven his uncle can suffer as much as possible for what he has done. Vengeance is a strong emotion and everyone fantasize what it would be like to even the score once in a while, but as Hamlet will later learn, what goes around comes around. The last Hamlet soliloquy is the final act of vengeance for Hamlet. In an epic dual with his uncle, not only does he fatally wound Claudia, but also tragically himself. In the process his mother, the queen also becomes poisoned and essentially the entire royal family dies. At this point Hamlet sees the cost of vengeance. It is a moral we can all relate. For as it seems attractive to aggressively pursue an emotionally satisfying path to rectify a wrong, however, those paths often lead to repercussions one couldnt possibly imagine.
